THERE’S TREASURE TO DIS COVER AMONG THREE PRIS TINE COURSES IN GETAWAYS GOLF April/May 2015 61 THE STATE’S MOTHER LODE. BY KE VIN SAMSON I found a seat for breakfast by the window just inside the TK TK TK TK TK TK TK TK TK TK TK TK front door of Grounds, a restaurant on Main Street in the Gold Rush town of Murphys. ¶ For more than 100 years, Murphys was a mere dot on the map that you would miss if you blinked driving through on Highway 4 on your way to Bear Mountain. Today, the town proudly celebrates its place in state history, but its attraction is no longer the shiny metal that made this part of California famous. ¶ The nuggets drawing visitors and second-home buyers up twolane roads throughout the Gold Country are family-owned wineries, fine restaurants, historical curiosities and recreational diversions—including golf. The artifacts and lore of 1849 are being mined by developers and perpetuated by storytellers to give luster to a landscape of rolling hills and standing oak. ¶ My business here is golf. Several championship courses were opened in the Mother Lode about 20 years ago, about the length of time it takes for a course to mature, settle in and stand the test of time and steady play. Reports have been coming of outstanding courses open year-round that credible sources are rating better than many elite tracks such as Spyglass Hill and Spanish Bay. Perhaps these reports are simply tall tales, fools gold for gullible golfers. I was aiming to find out. »
