65 WHAT’S NEW IN OBSOLETE TECHNOLOGY Glaschütte Germany was the birthplace of the German watchmaking industry. It was also unlucky, in that it got stuck behind an Iron Curtain for 45 years. Nomos Glaschüte was founded two months after the Berlin Wall all came down. That alone is pretty cool. Every watch from Nomos is almost startling in its simplicity. The company follows a very German design tradition of stripping away artifice to leave us with only Nomos Orion Neomatik White Face Sapphire Crystal back | $3860 what’s essential. It sounds like that would make for a plain watch, but the results are beautiful and elemental. Nomos also makes it’s own movements, which is kind-of a big deal. Most mechanical watches (Even from well-known brands that cost much, much more) contain movements sourced from 3rd parties. The fact that they’ve only been around for 27 years, and they’ve mastered every aspect of design and construction, is one reason they have such a following.
