Seiko has a reputation in the US for making great quartz watches. What you may not know is that they have also been making mechanical timepieces for 125 years. Seiko arguably makes the best, inexpensive mechanical watches in the world, but they also make watches like the Grand Seiko Spring Drive that are as finely finished (and nearly as expensive) as the very best Swiss and German watches. Aside from the fine craftsmanship, what makes many Grand Seikos unique is an innovative combination of mechanical and quartz technology. Basically, this is an auto-winding mechanical watch, but one critically important part of the movement (the escapement) has been replaced with a quartz regulator, which acts as a brake on the mainspring and gives this watch an accuracy of 1/2 second per day, which is four times more accurate than the most accurate mechanical movements in the world.
