In the early days of her career, Susie Wang was working at a
large, prestigious cosmetic company, formulating a new eye cream, when she accidentally
spilled one of the chemicals she was using onto her hard plastic lab table. She was shocked
to see that the chemical made the table warp. If one of the eye cream’s ingredients could
do that to hard plastic, she wondered, what could it do to human skin?
