“Row, row, row your boat….” That’s one among several choices
at Vasona Lake. You can sing as you stroke with your oars, or
instead rent a sailboat, kayak, pedal boat and paddle board
on the premises from the Los Gatos-Saratoga Community
Education and Recreation Center. We much prefer the gentle
ripples of moving water over digital music any day. In the
spring, rentals are available only on weekends. Rates: $20 per
hour for pedal boats and two-person kayaks; $15 per hour for
Channel your inner Legolas (“Lord of the Rings”) and
gallop thyself to the Stevens Creek Archery Range
at the Stevens Creek County Park on Mt. Eden Road
in Cupertino. The range is free daily and open until
sundown. Crossbows and dogs are not allowed for
obvious reasons. Need tips? Hobnob with members
of the Bowhunters Unlimited Club who will gladly give
you free lessons the first Sunday of every month in
the spring and fall. If you are closer to San Jose, visit
the free archery range at the Santa Teresa County
Park, very popular with the Black Mountain Bowmen
archery club. The range is open daily except for the
first and third Saturdays of the month when the
archery club gets private access.
Anyone at any age can learn the sport and enjoy
the social aspect of practicing with a group.
single kayaks and standup paddle boards. The lake also offers
fishing for black bass and catfish.
You can rent kayaks and standup paddleboards for $15 to
$25 per hour from Outback Adventures at Stevens Creek
Reservoir, Cupertino. There are hardly any crowds, and while
the outfitter rents only on weekends from 11 to 5 p.m. starting
in mid-May, you can bring your own kayak or gear to enjoy
the water any time of year, and you can stay out past 5 p.m.
