Children’s Musical Theatre San Jose stages this musical retelling
of “Romeo and Juliet,” set in 1950s New York City, where
Tony and Maria’s forbidden love is caught between warring
street gangs, the established local boy Jets and the encroaching
Puerto Rican Sharks. The popularity of this show proves that
the heart-wrenching struggle of teens to survive and thrive despite
an environment of prejudice is timeless. The talented young cast
tackles grown-up themes like immigration, gang violence and
xenophobia through iconic choreography set to a thrilling score
by Leonard Bernstein and Stephen Sondheim, which features exuberant
and catchy classics like “Maria,” “America” and “Tonight.”
