I t’s summertime! No other season brings such a sense of freedom with
its long, sunlit days and exuberant, schools-out mentality. This time
of year is just made for a breather, a guilt-free break from routine and
responsibility—so let the liberation begin!
Summer Flings 2018 kicks it off with cool coastal excursions a short
drive to the north. “Daytripping in Marin” by writer Carole Barrow explores
an array of activities awaiting across the mighty Golden Gate. See Angel
Island by Segway, slurp oysters in Marshall or visit the Tule Elk Preserve at
Tomales Point—however you define fun, there’s an adventure for everyone.
And the beat goes on with Flings’ annual listing of “Hot Summer Sounds,”
a lively roundup of great concerts and musical performances throughout the
Bay Area.
Want more ways to fill the days? No sweat; turn to Calendar. With more
than 150 things to do and places to go—two months of nonstop seasonal
entertainment—summer boredom is a non-issue. Keep it handy, along with
our comprehensive Dining Out guide, another great resource to scan on days
when eating out is more appealing than cooking. Here you’ll find Best Bites
with a tempting selection of every type of cuisine to suit both budget and
taste, from four-star restaurant to corner café.
Delicious food calls for fine wine, and in pursuit of that topic we present
“Tasting the Town.” As writer Susan Hathaway explains, it’s now easier than
ever to find favorite sips without driving to remote mountain wineries. With
more and more local winemakers setting up satellite tasting rooms in downtown
areas, customers from Saratoga to San Carlos are enjoying the urban
winery scene—a convenient and relaxing way to sample a variety of pours.
Also in this issue, we’re proud to bring you our 36th Annual Business
Review, a special report that includes an astute overview of last year’s economic
picture, as well as our annual ranking of Silicon Valley’s Top 100 companies.
As a companion piece, “STEM Superstars” by writer Julie Vallone,
will be of interest to many readers. This timely story features intriguing mini
profiles of three talented local women who offer personal and professional
insights on their successful careers in science and technology fields. It makes
for an engaging and fascinating read.
While you’re here, check out The V.I.P. Guide: Our A-List of Business
Resources; it’s an exciting advertorial showcase of outstanding companies
doing business throughout the Bay Area.
And, as usual, this issue is packed with visual treats—from Style, with
head-turning fashions to dress up day trips and getaways, to the delightfully
uncommon parade of products in Spotlight.
So indulge in a well-deserved timeout: close the laptop and open a bottle
of wine; chill out in a comfy chaise; order that extra scoop of ice cream and
embrace every spontaneous moment. Here’s to the freedom of summer!
