Medicine, among many other prestigious organizations.
Unlike many women in fields heavily dominated by men, Shatz
says she didn’t experience harassment or hostile environments due
to her gender. On the contrary, she says she received a great deal
of support throughout her career.
“I think it’s important for people to realize, especially in light of
the MeToo movement, that there are fabulous men who have mentored
many women in their careers without any weird stuff going
on,” she says. “I had many wonderful mentors along the way.”
Largely absent throughout her career, though, were female role
models, due to the lack of woman in science at the time. This, she
said, made it difficult to understand how to manage some aspects
of her personal life, like balancing a career with children. Shatz
