says that as a result, she held off on having children and was unable
to do so when she was ready to have them.
“At the time, there were no women with children around who
also had major careers. Today there are so many women at work
who are managing to do both. It’s difficult, but I’m so impressed
with what they’ve been able to accomplish,” she says.
Based on her experience, she thinks it’s important for women
who really want children to consider having them sooner rather
than later.
“Nowadays, it’s much more possible to think accurately about
trying to achieve a balance between your career and your personal
life. Having children is an important issue to consider early, and
not to put it off.”
Shatz hopes that women now going into sciences and other
